If you were lucky enough to grow up with a fireplace in your house, you know just how important it was to the family unit.
Gathering around the hearth, playing games, watching television or listening to your favorite tunes, it brought the family together, thus giving way to the saying “The Hearth is the Heart of Your Home.” And how true it is… your hearth can definitely be the center of your house.
Some years ago the hearth, the floor area around the fireplace, was mostly thought of as the best place to warm up because the fireplace more often than not, heated the whole house, so the closer you were to the fire the quicker you were able to knock the chill off. Back then too, the hearth wasn’t quite the decorative asset it is these days.
When constructing a home now, many people build an entire room around the hearth and fireplace. They decide on the look they want and it becomes the focal point of the whole room, even the entire house.
You can do all sorts of things to make your hearth unique but key is the type of textures you choose. You can make use of ornamental tiles or colored bricks or if you like the cabin feel, you can add wood panels to the wall around the fireplace. Painted brick is also an attention-getter if you want an updated look. For my money though, you can never go wrong with red bricks, beautiful wood or stone.
There are also all sorts of things you can do with cushions, carpets and… of course, furniture. Some wonderful overstuffed chairs, a leather recliner or a comfy sofa only add to the overall look and feel of the room, giving you an unbeatable coziness on cool fall or winter days.
Your hearth is the perfect place for conversation and family but it’s also the best place in the world to wind down after a long day with a glass of wine, a good book and your pets by your side. Regardless of your mood or activity, you can never go wrong with a home built around a gorgeous hearth.
